SQL Server Engineer 

This is a hybrid role which will be responsible for technical and administration aspects of the SQL Database and Server infrastructure.

Responsible for working with other technical colleagues to provide second and third line technical support as well as specialist technical input into future projects requiring new hardwaresoftware or changes to the group infrastructure, both in and out of hours.

Ensuring backup maintenance is successfully maintained and also responsible for the ongoing patching of the Server and SQL environments, inline with security policies.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Undertake routine installations and de-installations of items of hardware and/or infrastructure software
  • Manage database configuration including installing and upgrading software and maintaining relevant documentation
  • Investigate and coordinate the resolution of potential and actual service problems relating to relevant technology areas
  • Monitor database activity and resource usage
  • Review infrastructure software/security updates and identify those that merit action
  • Prepare and maintain operational documentation for infrastructure software
  • Develop installation procedures and standards and schedule installation work
  • Draft and maintain procedures and documentation for databases
  • Provide specialist guidance and advice to less experienced colleagues to ensure that best use is made of available assets and to maintain or improve the infrastructure service
  • Contribute to standards setting for database objects and ensure conformance to these standards
  • Optimise database performance and plan for forecast resource needs in line with Capacity Management processes
  • Design and build infrastructure integration components and interfaces
  • Lead practical implementation work under the technical direction of the systems architect. May contribute to the overall design of the solution. May define the technical criteria for product/component selection
  • Contribute to decisions about tools, methods and approaches
  • Manage storage configuration including installing/upgrading software and maintaining relevant documentation
  • Contribute to the setting of standards for storage and ensure conformance to these standards

Experience of:

  • SQL Server administration & support
  • Windows Server administration & support
  • Storage technologies (preferably NetApp)
  • Red Hat Linux administration & support
  • Investigating/Troubleshooting IT Server/SQL Infrastructure related incidents

Knowledge of:

  • VMWare administration
  • VEEAM administration
  • Oracle Database
  • CA Autosys
  • Azure Integration Services
  • O365 administration

Qualified in / studying towards relevant qualifications:

  • MCSA: SQL Server 2012/2014/2016
  • MCSA: SQL 2016 Database Administration
  • MCSE: Data Management and Analytics
